Holes

They say that Alzheimer’s is like having holes in the brain.  I imagine these holes as places where the memories just fall through, out of reach, no longer accessible.  We are noticing more and more of these holes in mom’s thinking.  But why does she hold on so tightly to some pieces and not others?  It is confusing and frustrating for all of us.  I can hear that frustration in mom’s voice.  I think for a moment today she didn’t want to know who I was, only that I was the one who was reminding her to do something she doesn’t understand or remember.  For a moment I felt what it will be like when her memory of me falls into one of those holes.
